Math meets poetry

The 2020 Bridges Conference of mathematics and the arts had to be held online this year because of Covid-19, but that means you can visit virtually to get explore the many ways that math gets braided with music, visual art, film–and poetry.

Here you can find Alice’s short paper, Perhaps the Plaintive Numbers Flow with a brief video introduction. The paper points out that “numbers” was a synonym for poetry for many centuries, and the word “rhyme” goes back to an ancient stem meaning “to count.” So what are poets counting? Recently, neuroscientists have been exploring the firing of a particular group of neurons that might be giving poets something to count on their fingers.
